Du‘a for Poisonous Bites like Snake, Scorpions, and Other Stings

Du‘a for Poisonous Bites

For poisonous bites such as from snakes, scorpions, etc., one must try to take immediate medicine and treatment. Alongside that, one should recite du‘ā. We have seen that a Companion recited Sūrah al-Fātiḥah for a person bitten by a snake as treatment.

“In another ḥadīth, ʿAlī (RA) said:
“One night the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was performing ṣalāh. During the ṣalāh, he placed his hand on the ground, and then a scorpion stung him. He caught the scorpion with his sandal and killed it. After finishing the ṣalāh, he said: ‘Accursed scorpion! It spares neither the one who is praying nor the one who is not praying, neither a Prophet nor anyone else!’ Then he asked for water and salt to be brought. He mixed water and salt in a container and poured it over his stung finger, rubbed it with his hand, and recited Sūrah al-Falaq and Sūrah al-Nās and made du‘ā. In another narration: He recited Sūrah al-Kāfirūn, Sūrah al-Falaq, and Sūrah al-Nās.” The ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ.

Narrated from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn (RA):

He said: There is no ruqyah (incantation) except in the case of the evil eye or poisonous sting. The narrator said: After that I mentioned this ḥadīth to Saʿīd ibn Jubayr (RAḥ), and he said: Ibn ʿAbbās (RA) narrated to us that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: All the nations were presented before me. (I saw that) a prophet passed by with one or two men along with him. A prophet passed by with nobody along with him. Finally, a large group was shown to me. I asked: “What is this? Is this my ummah?” It was said: “No, this is Mūsā (AS) and his people.” Then it was said to me: “Look towards the horizon.” I saw a huge group covering the horizon. Then it was said to me: “Look towards the other side of the horizon.” I saw a huge group covering the horizons. It was said: “This is your ummah. Among them seventy thousand will enter Paradise without reckoning.”

Then the Prophet (ﷺ) went inside his house without explaining who those people would be. The people present began discussing it. They said: “We have believed in Allah and followed His Messenger (ﷺ). So we must be among them.” Others said: “They are our children who were born in the era of Islam, whereas we were born in the era of ignorance (Jāhiliyyah).”

When this news reached the Prophet (ﷺ), he came out and said: They are those people who do not practice ruqyah (incantations), do not take omens from birds, and do not apply branding with fire (cauterization). Rather, they put their trust only in their Lord.

Then ʿUkkāshah ibn Miḥṣān (RA) stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Am I among them?” He (ﷺ) said: Yes. Then another man stood up and said: “Am I also among them?” He (ﷺ) said: ʿUkkāshah has preceded you in this.

Narrated from Abū Hurayrah (RA):

I used to invite my mother to Islam when she was a polytheist. One day when I invited her, she became angry and spoke unpleasant words about the Prophet (ﷺ). I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) weeping and said: O Messenger of Allah! I used to invite my mother to Islam but she rejected my invitation. Today when I invited her, she said unpleasant things about you. So please supplicate to Allah to guide the mother of Abū Hurayrah.

So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) supplicated and said: O Allah! Guide the mother of Abū Hurayrah.

Then I returned home with the glad tidings from the supplication of the Prophet (ﷺ). When I reached home, I found the door closed. My mother heard the sound of my footsteps and said: Abū Hurayrah, wait! I heard the sound of water falling. Then she took a bath, put on her garment, and without covering her head she opened the door and said: Abū Hurayrah! Ashhadu an lā ilāha illallāh, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh.

So I immediately returned to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) weeping with joy and said: O Messenger of Allah! Rejoice, for Allah has answered your supplication and has guided the mother of Abū Hurayrah! Upon hearing this, the Prophet (ﷺ) praised Allah and spoke good words.
