Umrah in Ramadan: The Reward of Hajj – Authentic Hadiths and Powerful Virtues

1. Narrated by Salamah ibn al-Akwa’ (RA):

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرٌ، – يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُضَرَ – عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ بُكَيْرٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ، مَوْلَى سَلَمَةَ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ، – رضى الله عنه – قَالَ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ ‏{‏ وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ‏}‏ كَانَ مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ وَيَفْتَدِيَ ‏.‏ حَتَّى نَزَلَتِ الآيَةُ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا فَنَسَخَتْهَا ‏. 

“When this verse was revealed:

‘And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] – a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person’ [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:184],

those who wanted to break their fast and pay the ransom were allowed to do so.

Then the following verse was revealed and abrogated it.”

2. Umrah During Ramadan is Equal to Hajj

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ بَيَانٍ، وَجَابِرٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ خَنْبَشٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ عُمْرَةٌ فِي رَمَضَانَ تَعْدِلُ حِجَّةً ‏”‏ ‏.‏ 

Narrated by Wahb ibn Khanbash (RA):

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“An ‘Umrah during Ramadan is equal to Hajj [in reward].”

Note on Chain (Isnad):

The hadith is authentic, though one narrator (Jabir ibn Yazid) was criticized by some scholars. However, the hadith has numerous supporting narrations (Shawahid), strengthening its authenticity.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَمْرُو بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الزَّعَافِرِيِّ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ هَرِمِ بْنِ خَنْبَشٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ عُمْرَةٌ فِي رَمَضَانَ تَعْدِلُ حِجَّةً ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Narrated by Harim ibn Khanbash (RA):

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“An ‘Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj.”

Note on Chain:

Though the chain includes Dawud ibn Yazid, a weak narrator, the hadith is considered authentic due to multiple supporting chains in Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and others.

4. Another Version of the Same Hadith

‎  حَدَّثَنَا جُبَارَةُ بْنُ الْمُغَلِّسِ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْقِلٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ “‏ عُمْرَةٌ فِي رَمَضَانَ تَعْدِلُ حِجَّةً ‏”‏ ‏.‏  

Narrated by Abu Ma‘qil (RA):

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Performing Umrah during Ramadan is equal to performing Hajj.”

Note on Chain:

Though some narrators like Jubarah ibn al-Mughallis and Ibrahim ibn Uthman were criticized, the hadith’s authenticity is supported by 270 corroborating narrations, including 150 sahih ones.
