Who Are the Ten Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) Promised Paradise?
The Companions sacrificed their lives and wealth to help the Messenger (ﷺ) and served the religion. Among them were some Companions who, for their deeds, received the glad tidings of Paradise in this world. They are called Asharah Mubashsharah – the ten Companions who were given the glad tidings of Paradise.
Those who received the glad tidings of Jannah in this world are:
1. Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA):
The Messenger of the World, Muhammad (ﷺ), said regarding Abu Bakr (RA): “Abu Bakr is of Paradise.” [Bukhari]
Among the adults, he was the first to accept Islam. As soon as Abu Bakr (RA) heard about the Mi‘raj, he believed in it, and so the Messenger (ﷺ) honored him with the title As-Siddiq.
The Messenger (ﷺ) said: “No one has done me such a favor for which I did not return something in exchange, except Abu Bakr (RA). He has done so much favor to me that Allah Ta‘ala Himself will reward him on the Day of Judgment.” [Tirmidhi]
2. Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA):
Umar (RA) was also known as Amir al-Mu’minin and Al-Faruq. He was an expert jurist in Islamic law. Because of his strong stance for justice, he was given the title Al-Faruq – the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood. Umar (RA) had such a personality that even Shaytan feared him. In matters of religion, he was very strict.
For his deeds, he was given the glad tidings of Jannah in this world. Muhammad (ﷺ) said about Umar (RA): “Umar is of Paradise.” [Bukhari]
3. Uthman ibn Affan (RA):
Uthman (RA) was known as Dhul-Nurayn (the Possessor of Two Lights) and Al-Ghani (the Generous).
He was among the As-Sabiqun al-Awwalun – the earliest people to accept Islam. He was the third Caliph of Islam. He was one of the six Companions upon whom Muhammad (ﷺ) remained pleased throughout his life. Hence, he too received the glad tidings of Paradise during his lifetime. Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Uthman is of Paradise.” [Bukhari]
4. Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA):
The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: “My Ali is of Paradise.” [Musnad Ahmad, Abu Dawud]
Ali (RA) was known as the trustworthy leader, Abu Turab (Father of Dust), and Asadullah (the Lion of Allah). He was a fearless warrior. For his bravery in the Battle of Badr, the Messenger (ﷺ) gifted him the sword Dhulfiqar. In judgments, Ali (RA) was the most experienced among the Companions.
5. Talhah ibn Ubaydullah (RA):
The Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Umar is of Paradise. Uthman is of Paradise. Talhah is of Paradise.” [Musnad Ahmad]
He was a close Companion of the Messenger (ﷺ). He is especially known for his participation in the Battle of Uhud and the Battle of the Camel (Siffin).
6. Zubair ibn al-Awwam (RA):
The Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Talhah is of Paradise and Zubair is of Paradise.” [Musnad Ahmad, Abu Dawud]
He was adorned with qualities like generosity, kindness, and trustworthiness. Zubair (RA) was a courageous warrior. In the Battle of Badr, he displayed immense bravery. His very name struck terror among the enemy forces.
7. Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (RA):
The Messenger (ﷺ) said: “And Abdur Rahman ibn Awf is of Paradise.” [Musnad Ahmad, Abu Dawud]
Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (RA) was among the first eight people to accept Islam. Due to his wise decisions, the Muslim community was saved from many major disasters and won great victories in battles.
8. Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas (RA):
The Messenger (ﷺ) said: “And Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas is of Paradise.” [Musnad Ahmad]
He was the 17th person to accept Islam. The first battle in Islamic history was the Battle of Badr. In this battle, Hazrat Sa‘d (RA) fought with extraordinary courage. In the absence of Bilal (RA), he had the honor of giving the Adhan three times. He was the first blessed person to shoot an arrow in the path of Allah. Among the leaders of the Muslim conquest of Persia, he was one of the most significant.
9. Sa‘id ibn Zayd (RA):
The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: “And Sa‘id ibn Zayd is of Paradise.” [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad]
He was among the early Muslims who accepted Islam in the first stage. Sa‘id ibn Zayd (RA) was a brave warrior. He was Mustajab al-Da‘wah – whenever he made du‘a, Allah accepted it.
10. Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (RA):
The Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Abu Bakr is of Paradise. Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah is of Paradise.” [Musnad Ahmad, Abu Dawud]
Abu Ubaydah (RA) was the one who did not even spare his own father for the sake of Islam.
In the Battle of Uhud, he was among the ten Companions who formed a protective shield around the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to defend him.
May Allah Ta‘ala grant them high ranks in Jannah and grant us the ability to follow in their footsteps. Ameen
