How to Perform Wudu Step by Step

Wudu (also spelled Wudhu or Wudoo) is the Islamic act of ritual purification using water. It is a requirement before performing Salah (prayer), touching the Quran, and several other acts of worship. Allah says in the Quran:

> *”O you who have believed, when you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.”* — (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6)

In this complete guide, you will learn exactly how to perform Wudu step by step, what breaks Wudu, and common mistakes to avoid. Whether you are a new Muslim, a child learning for the first time, or someone who wants to verify the correct method — this guide is for you.

## What is Wudu in Islam?

Wudu is a form of ritual purification that prepares a Muslim physically and spiritually for worship. The word “Wudu” comes from the Arabic root word “wadaa” which means cleanliness and brightness.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

> *”Cleanliness is half of faith.”* — (Sahih Muslim 223)

Wudu is not just physical cleaning — it is an act of worship that carries great reward. The Prophet ﷺ also said that on the Day of Judgment, Muslims will be recognized by the brightness on their faces, hands and feet from the traces of Wudu.

What You Need Before Making Wudu

Before you begin, make sure you have:

– **Clean water** — rainwater, tap water, well water or river water. The water must be pure and unchanged in smell, color or taste.
– **Intention (Niyyah)** — you must have the intention in your heart to perform Wudu for the sake of Allah.
– **No barriers** — remove nail polish, thick creams or anything that prevents water from reaching the skin.

How to Perform Wudu Step by Step

Follow these 8 steps carefully to perform a complete and correct Wudu:

Step 1 — Make the Intention (Niyyah)

Before you begin, make the intention in your heart that you are performing Wudu to purify yourself for the sake of Allah. The intention does not need to be spoken out loud — it is in the heart.

You may say quietly: *”Bismillah”* (In the name of Allah) before starting.

Step 2 — Wash Both Hands Three Times

Begin by washing both hands up to the wrists three times. Make sure water reaches between the fingers. This is a Sunnah act that cleanses the hands before using them to wash the rest of the body.

**Tip:** Start with the right hand before the left. The Prophet ﷺ always liked to begin with the right side.

Step 3 — Rinse the Mouth Three Times (Madmadah)

Take water into your mouth, swirl it around thoroughly and spit it out. Do this three times. Make sure the water reaches all areas of the mouth including the teeth and gums.

Step 4 — Clean the Nose Three Times (Istinshaq)

Sniff water into the nose and then blow it out. Do this three times using your right hand to bring water to the nose and your left hand to blow it out.

### Step 5 — Wash the Face Three Times

Wash your entire face three times — from the hairline at the top of the forehead down to the chin, and from ear to ear. Make sure no part of the face is left dry.

For men with beards: pass wet fingers through the beard to ensure water reaches the roots.

### Step 6 — Wash Both Arms Three Times

Wash the right arm first, from the fingertips up to and including the elbow, three times. Then wash the left arm the same way. Make sure water reaches the entire arm including the elbow joint.

**Important:** The elbow must be included — not just the forearm.

### Step 7 — Wipe the Head Once (Masah)

Wet your hands and wipe over the entire head once — from the front hairline to the back of the head and then back again. This is done only once, unlike the other steps.

Then wipe both ears — insert the index fingers into the ears and wipe the outside of the ears with the thumbs.

### Step 8 — Wash Both Feet Three Times

Wash the right foot first, including between the toes and up to and including the ankle, three times. Then wash the left foot the same way. Make sure water reaches between all toes.

**Tip:** Use your little finger to clean between the toes.

## Dua After Completing Wudu

After finishing Wudu, raise your gaze toward the sky and recite:

**أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ**

*”Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh.”*

**Translation:** “I bear witness that there is no god except Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.”

The Prophet ﷺ said: *”Whoever performs Wudu and says this dua, all eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him and he may enter through whichever one he wishes.”* — (Sahih Muslim 234)

## What Are the Obligatory (Fard) Acts of Wudu?

These are the acts that MUST be done for Wudu to be valid:

1. Washing the face once
2. Washing both arms up to the elbows once
3. Wiping the head once
4. Washing both feet up to the ankles once
5. Doing all acts in order (Tartib)
6. Performing acts without a long break in between (Muwalah)

## What Are the Sunnah Acts of Wudu?

These are additional acts that the Prophet ﷺ performed and are highly recommended:

– Saying Bismillah before starting
– Washing hands at the beginning
– Using Miswak (tooth stick) or brushing teeth
– Rinsing the mouth and nose
– Wiping the ears
– Doing each act three times
– Starting with the right side
– Reciting the dua after Wudu

## What Breaks Wudu?

Your Wudu is invalid and must be repeated if any of the following occurs:

– **Passing wind** (gas) from the back passage
– **Using the toilet** (urinating or defecating)
– **Deep sleep** where you lose consciousness
– **Loss of consciousness** or fainting
– **Bleeding heavily** from a wound (according to some scholars)
– **Vomiting a mouthful**
– **Touching private parts** directly with the hand (according to some scholars)

## Common Mistakes in Wudu

Avoid these common errors that many Muslims make:

❌ **Not washing the elbows** — the elbow must be fully included
❌ **Missing spots on the face** — make sure the entire face is covered
❌ **Not cleaning between fingers and toes** — water must reach every part
❌ **Wasting water** — the Prophet ﷺ warned against using too much water
❌ **Doing acts out of order** — follow the correct sequence
❌ **Forgetting the intention** — Niyyah must be present from the beginning

## How Long Does Wudu Last?

Wudu remains valid until one of the things that breaks it occurs. There is no time limit on Wudu. If you made Wudu in the morning and nothing broke it, you can use the same Wudu for Dhuhr prayer in the afternoon.

## Can Women Pray with Nail Polish?

No — according to the majority of Islamic scholars, nail polish creates a barrier that prevents water from reaching the nails, making Wudu invalid. Women should remove nail polish before making Wudu. There are special “breathable” nail polishes available, but scholars differ on whether these are permissible.
