According to scholars (like Ibn al-Qayyim and Imam al-Ghazali), the following are among the major causes of a dead or corrupted heart:

  • Excessive Sinning โ€“ darkens and seals the heart.
  • Neglecting the Qurโ€™an โ€“ leads to spiritual emptiness.
  • Excessive Attachment to Dunya โ€“ love of wealth and fame blinds the soul.
  • Bad Companionship โ€“ associates who mislead weaken faith.
  • Neglecting Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah) โ€“ cuts the connection with the Creator.

Detailed, scholarly explanation of the concept

The heart is the center of our faith. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. The Messenger ๏ทบ saidโ€”

โ€œThere is a piece of flesh in the body; if it is good, the whole body is good, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Verily, it is the heart.โ€

(Sahih al-Bukhari 52, Sahih Muslim 1599)

Today, we will see five things that corrupt the heart, from which we must stay awayโ€”

  • Excessive Socializing (ูƒุซุฑุฉ ุงู„ุฎู„ุทุฉ)

Maintaining necessary relationships is permissible in Islam. However, excessive socializing takes away peace of heart, increases heedlessness, and distances one from the remembrance of Allah.

Allah saysโ€”

โ€œMuch laughter kills the heart.โ€

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4193)

Unnecessary gatherings, idle talk, and pointless conversations harden the heart.

  • Long Hopes (ุทูˆู„ ุงู„ุฃู…ู„)

Long hopes trap people in worldly desires, make them forget death, and distract them from preparing for the Hereafter.

The Messenger ๏ทบ saidโ€”

โ€œTwo things never grow old in a person even when he grows oldโ€” love for wealth and long hopes.โ€

(Sahih al-Bukhari 6421, Sahih Muslim 1047)

ย When people plan too much for the future while forgetting death and accountability, the heart becomes corrupted.

  • Music and Singing (ุณู…ุงุน ุงู„ู…ุนุงุฒู)

Music destroys the softness of the heart, diverts one from the remembrance of Allah, and misguides from His path.

Allah saysโ€”

โ€œAnd among mankind is he who purchases idle talk to mislead (men) from the path of Allah.โ€

(Surah Luqman 31:6)

Ibn Abbas (RA), Ibn Masโ€˜ud (RA), and many other Companions explained that โ€œidle talkโ€ here refers to music and singing. (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

  • Overeating (ูƒุซุฑุฉ ุงู„ุฃูƒู„)

Excessive eating makes the body lazy and hardens the heart.

The Messenger ๏ทบ saidโ€”

โ€œThe son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. A few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. But if he must eat, then one-third for food, one-third for drink, and one-third for breathing.โ€

(Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2380, Sahih)

Overeating leads to laziness, heedlessness, and disinterest in worship.

  • Oversleeping (ูƒุซุฑุฉ ุงู„ู†ูˆู…)

Too much sleep brings laziness and prevents one from prayer and worship.

Allah saysโ€”

โ€œThey used to sleep but little by night, and in the hours before dawn, they would seek forgiveness.โ€

(Surah adh-Dhariyat 51:17โ€“18)

The Companions and the pious predecessors used to sleep little and spend their nights in Qurโ€™an recitation and remembrance.

ย The Path of Purification

The diseases of the heart gradually weaken faith. Therefore, we mustโ€”

  • Reduce unnecessary socializing
  • Give up long hopes
  • Avoid music and vain entertainment
  • Practice moderation in eating and sleeping

๐Ÿ“– Allah saysโ€”

โ€œSuccessful indeed is the one who purifies his heart, and ruined indeed is the one who corrupts it.โ€

(Surah ash-Shams 91:9โ€“10)

Narrated by Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him):

Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (๏ทบ) said,

โ€œWhoever is deprived of gentleness is deprived of all goodness.โ€

(Muslim, Mishkat Hadith No. 5069)

  • ย May Allah purify our hearts and protect us from these spiritual diseases. Ameen
